Shrink sleeve labels are made from a clear film which is printed on the back using rotogravure. A solvent melts the two edges together to make a “sleeve.” The sleeves, in roll-form, are cut and placed onto the container. The product then goes through a tunnel filled with steam or heat which shrinks the sleeve until it fits tightly against the container. Most containers are filled before being labeled using this method.
Shrink sleeves are normally glossy, but they can also be matte or textured. High definition graphics are available in special metallic and thermochromatic inks. Shrink sleeves work well for products that have shapes which do not allow for printing. They offer full length, 360 degree decoration which typically increases retail shelf appeal and brand impact. When used as tamper evident bands, shrink sleeves add value by providing product safety.
