Glossary of Terms

ASTM   Originally known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM International is an international voluntary standards organization that develops and produces technical standards for materials, products, systems and services. ASTM Standards compliance is voluntary but in the United States, with the 1995 passage of the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act, the U.S. government is required to use privately developed standards whenever possible.

Cored Rolls    Can liners that are rolled together around a cardboard "core."

Coreless Rolls   Can liners that are rolled together without a "core," and are perforated for easy dispensing and opening with less waste.

Dart Drop Test    ASTM test used to determine the resistance of a bag to local failure or puncturing of the film.

Elmendorf Tear Test    ASTM test used to measure the resistance to tearing.

Film Strength    Describes the physical strength of the can liner. Some resins are stronger than others, depending on the type of resin used to manufacture them.

Flat Seal    A straight heat seal along the bottom of the bag.

Gauge    Term used to describe a bag's thickness. LLDPE liners are generally measured in mils, while High Density bags are measured in microns.

Gusseted Seal    A seal that is made when multiple layers of a bag are tucked in and sealed together.

HAO    Higher Alpha Olefin resin is a high-grade hexene- or octene-based resin used in our Magnum can liners. This type of resin allows for the strongest and highest quality can liner available.

High Molecular Weight-High Density Polyethylene (HMW-HDPE)    This is a relatively new resin that has greater film strength than LLDPE, but slightly weaker puncture and tear resistance.

Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE)    This type of resin allows for high puncture and tear resistance and is used to make several of our bag types.

Mil     A unit of measurement in thousandths of an inch (for example, .001 = one thousandth of an inch or 1.0 mil) typically used to designate the thickness of linear low density liners.

Micron    Also mic; one thousandth of a millimeter; typically used to designate the thickness of high density products

Resin     The basic raw material from which can liners are made.

Star Seal    A seamless bottom design that allows the bag to be seamless and virtually leak-proof. Its star-shaped appearance gives this seal its name.
